The Grates are proof in point that there’s no such thing as a typical career in the music industry. Emerging, quite literally, from a garage in Brisbane’s outer-suburbs, the band found worldwide acclaim with their jagged, energetic indie rock. But it doesn’t end there. Recent years have seen creative core Patience Hodgson and John Patterson become small business owners –their recently re-launched Southside operation is one of Brisbane’s most celebrated cafes and casual restaurants – raise two children, produce records for other artists, run craft classes, helm podcasts and contribute to the city’s independent art scene. All the while, they remain open and transparent about the challenges – as well as the victories – that they have encountered along the way. They’re a creative powerhouse and a fascinating lesson in teamwork, creative thinking, and staying true to your vision.
