This conversation between Leanne de Souza (Association of Artist Managers) and Dr Guy Morrow (University of Melbourne) will concern Guy’s book: Artist Management: Agility in the Creative and Cultural Industries (Routledge, 2018). This highly interactive and participatory discussion will throw up the BIG questions – what is creativity? What opportunities are created by digital disruption in the cultural sector? How do we operate in uncertain times? The book is rich with material acquired through research interviews conducted with artist managers and self-managed artists in five cities - New York, London, Toronto, Sydney and Melbourne.
The conversation will be grounded in organisational and business management literature; in particular, it will draw on theory relating to the lean start-up movement and the agile management movement. This conversation will be at its heart, about human relationships in times of uncertainty and rapid change - relationships that Guy will describe at times as harmonious and at other times, combustive. Of particular relevance to this conversation are the ways in which post-digital audience data moves feedback forward in the creative processes involved in cultural production.
